Chris Brown brought out his BMX skills to the Billboard Music Awards tonight. The singer rode onstage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to perform his high-energy “Turn Up the Music” against a colorful, bike ramp backdrop dubbed the “Fun Zone.” Breezy, outfitted in a leopard fur-lined jacket (opened to show off his muscular, tattooed chest) and bandana, gave the crowd his usual choreographed dancing, including some impressive twirls and turns at the end.

Fans on Twitter were divided on the number and despite finding it overall entertaining, some blasted the singer for apparently lip-syncing. Fans tweeted sentiments like, “What’s the point of performing live if you’re gonna lip sync? You should just become a back up dancer” alongside “I don’t mind Chris Brown lip synching ….. at least he PERFORMS !!!” and “CB performance never disappoints.”

The jury was also out in regards to his fashion choice for the performance too. Marie Claire’s Fashion Director Nina Garcia tweeted “is Chris Brown the new Abercrombie model? Fur parka & shirtless” while Hot 97 radio personality Miss Info poked “chris brown’s got a furby bomber and a doobie scarf on! Yay.”

Brown himself seemed ambivalent before his performance, tweeting, “Billboard awards?????? ….. Um.. Ok.. Im Down!”

After 6 years, 4 albums, and 11 nominations, singer Chris Brown finally took home his first GRAMMY at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Sunday, February 12, 2012.

Chris took home a GRAMMY for Best R&B Album for his 4th studio album, F.A.M.E. It’s been a long time coming, but we did it Team Breezy. Chris came out on stage to accept the award, presented by rapper Common and actress Taraji P. Henson.

Breezy’s Back.

With so many questions surrounding Chris Brown’s controversial return to the Grammys, the F.A.M.E. singer simply let his feet do the talking. It was 2009 when Brown assaulted ex-girlfriend Rihanna a night before both were scheduled to appear at the 51st Grammy Awards. Sunday night (February 12), however, it was all about the music.

Fans may not have recognized the intro beat to “Turn Up the Music,” Brown’s first single from his upcoming fifth album, Fortune, but they’re sure to be humming the tune tomorrow following Chris’ colorful performance at Sunday’s show.

When the stage lit up, Brown stood atop a collection of colorful blocks that at times resembled the 1980s arcade game “Q-Bert.” The electric-tuned, Underdogs-produced single filled Staples Center, as Brown, who was dressed in a white and gray varsity jacket, white pants and sparkling sneaks, kick-stepped up and down multiple levels of the high-rising stage prop.

As the beat built, the blocks went from red to blue to yellow and green with building intensity before Brown switched gears and went into the more familiar dance single “Beautiful People” from last year’s F.A.M.E. LP. The pop star got a bit daring, jumping across the structure while his backup dancers, who wore oversize winged ponchos, followed suit in a high-flying routine.

In the end, there were no innuendos or screen cuts to Breezy’s ex-flame Rihanna. Brown simply finished his number, stood triumphantly and saluted the crowd before taking a bow.

He appeared down for the count in 2009. He’d been arrested, and pleaded guilty to felony assault for beating then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and six months of community service. The court of public opinion was famously split, and more famously vehement.

But Chris Brown rebounded in 2011 with a string of hit singles — “Deuces,” “No BS,” “Look at Me Now” — as well as hot features like Big Sean’s “My Last.” There have been a slew of award nominations. Twitter-trending performances on the BET Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards and “Today.” With a recent headlining U.S. tour behind him, Brown is filming a new movie and working on the follow-up to his first Billboard No. 1 album, “F.A.M.E.” Tina Davis of TDC/Phase Too discusses the artist’s slow return to the fore.

Did you map out a strategy? Or is this comeback a natural course?
It was a combination. It was about us keeping the faith, and focusing on believing in God’s plan for Chris. Since he was 14, Chris has had a creative vision and direction for himself. So it was easy to work with him and figure out how to deal with the setbacks. Of course, I could have said, “This is what you’re going to do… this is how it’s going to go,” which a lot of managers do. The label [Jive Records] supported Chris and never turned its back on him. But it was Chris who came up with putting out a mixtape.

As much as some people wanted him to go away, his business life and personal life are totally two different things. And his love for music and his talent still shone throughout all of the good and bad times. So part of the strategy was to introduce his core fan base to Chris Brown now: the same talented guy who’s 22 and has a little more edge.

How difficult was it to gain some positive momentum?
As you can imagine, everybody and his mother had an idea as to what Chris could do to come back. Even to the point of being in his ear saying, “Hey, you need to let go of your manager.” But what Chris paid attention to was not so much the fact that this or that person had an answer. His only thing was to keep writing, keep recording, keep letting out [his] emotions and feelings within [his] music so people can better understand [him] and love [his] music.

The hardest part was trying to get people to understand that it wasn’t as easy as saying, “I’m sorry,” or having the right answers in an interview. It takes more than a year to deal with things that have happened in your past — whether you’re 50 or 20.

What strategic elements are you still implementing?
Not have him do interviews but to concentrate on performing and recording. It was something we set a while back. We’re not trying to be rude, selfish or disrespectful to anyone in any way. If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent. He signed up to sing and entertain. Not to talk about his personal life. We look at it as starting all over. Our grind, our choices are different than they probably would have been three years ago. But we are humbly trying to get back into the swing of things. He has this movie and other scripts are coming our way. A couple of different companies have been talking to us about partnering with him. They’re not afraid to stand next to him. They understand that hey, this young man has another 20-30 years to go. He has a right to be able to grow up and learn about being a man, being a person.

The 2012 GRAMMY Award Nominations were announced last night, and to our very pleasant surprise, Chris Brown managed to snag 3 awards himself. One for his latest studio album, F.A.M.E., and two for the rap song that sweeped the nation and put Chris back on top; Look at Me Now featuring hip-hop heavyweights Lil’ Wayne and Busta Rhymes. To this date, Chris has received 11 GRAMMY nominations, including Best Contemporary Album for Graffiti at the 2011 GRAMMY Awards. Hopefully this year Chris will be able to take home his first GRAMMY. The 2011 Soul Train Awards, which was taped on November 17 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA, aired last night (November 27) on BET. Soul/R&B’s biggest night included winners like Chris Brown, Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Rihanna.

Brown, who had five nominations going in, avoided going home empty handed by winning ‘Album of the Year’ for his latest release ‘F.A.M.E.’ The “Strip” star beat out Beyonce’s ‘4,’ Trey Songz’s ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure,’ Adele’s ‘21,’ Jill Scott’s ‘The Light of the Sun,’ and Jay-Z & Kanye West’s ‘Watch the Throne’ to claim the title.

Brown’s ex-girlfriend Rihanna took home ‘Best Caribbean Performance’ for her hit single “Man Down” but lost in the category of ‘Best Dance Performance’ to Beyonce Knowles.

“Motivation” landed Kelly Rowland her first solo Soul Train Award for ‘Song of the Year,’ while Marsha Ambrosius took home ‘Record of the Year’ for her touching single “Far Away.”

Other winners included Miguel (Best New Artist), Cee-Lo Green (Best Male R&B and Soul), Mary Mary (Best Gospel Performance) and Jill Scott (Best Female R&B and Soul Artist).

During the celebration, the event paid tribute to late 90’s rapper Heavy D, with performance by Naughty by Nature, Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow and Goodie Mob, who ended their set with: “We got nothing but love for you, Heavy!”

Additionally, Gladys Knight and Earth, Wind & Fire were honored during the event. Natalie Cole, Robin Thicke, Eric Benet, Marsha Ambrosius, Tamar Braxton and Bootsy Collins were among those who took part in honoring the music vets.
